We all heard about the Nazi gas chambers, but while I was visiting Auschwitz our tour group came to a wall with flowers all around the base of it. We asked what it was and we were told that some prisoners were killed by firing squad. I guess the Nazi guards wanted to make an example of them.

That was terrible enough to imagine, but the flowers really brought tears to your eyes. I assume that they were left by friends or relatives of the prisoners who died at that location.

I took this photo in the early '90s and as you can see I used some 21st century editing magic to enhance it a bit.
I wanted the flowers to contrast more from the background.

I've been there several times, only I cannot lay flowers for those lost because of the soldiers. I lay flowers to ask people for forgivness for my family. My great uncle always tells me his trips to Auschwitz and how great Hitler had been. I wish he'd stop. This is a beautiful shot. You did a wonderful job.

Thank you. It was such a quiet place. There were a lot of tourists there, but I was struck by the silence. People were so respectful of the place and talked in whispers.

There were prisoners shot by the fire squad regularly. For 'offences' as sharing bread, breaking ice of the windowsills to have something to drink, sleeping with hands under the "blankets" (for the homosexual prisoners) when it was minus thirty, etc.

There also was a gallows for the same reason.

What wasn't there, was grass. According to one survivor: "Had there been grass back then, we'd have eaten it."

I don't know how people survived such torture.

I did see a gallow while there, but I was told it was built after the camp was taken over by the Allies and the Commadant was executed there. I may be mistaken, it has been over a decade since I have been there and my memory may not be accurate when it comes to what the guide told me.

Thanks for your comments.

This shot really moved me, AG88--and your subtle enhancements only make it more poignant. It's really very simple, in terms of composition--but it speaks volumes, and your ability to convey emotion here is stunning. A beautiful, and heartbreaking image.
